Alastor Mad-Eye Moody is a former Auror (dark wizard hunter) who is hired by Albus Dumbledore to be Defense Against the Dark Arts professor during Harry Potter's fourth year at Hogwarts. During this year, Hogwarts has been chosen to host the Tri-Wizard tournament. When Harry is selected as an underage contestant, Dumbledore asks Moody to keep an eye out for him. Moody goes above and beyond the call of duty in this regard, essentially helping Harry to cheat by letting him know what each of his challenges will be beforehand. He has Hagrid show Harry the dragons of the first task, arranges for Harry to get the gillyweed he will need to accomplish the second, and points him in the right direction when going through the bushy labyrinth of the third task.It turns out the tournament has been used by Voldemort to set a trap for Harry so that his blood can be used in an arcane ritual that will give Voldemort a new body. After Harry escapes from Voldemort back to Hogwarts, Moody takes him back to his office and nearly kills the boy himself, only to be disarmed by Dumbledore, Snape and McGonogall. It turns out that the real Alastor Moody has been trapped in a foot locker the whole year, and that the person everyone thought was Moody was in fact Barty Crouch, Jr., a Death Eater. The real Moody is recruited by Albus Dumbledore when he re-forms the Order of the Phoenix to oppose the resurrected Voldemort. At the beginning of the next school year, Moody is among the entourage of wizards who arrive to escort Harry to the Order's headquarters, at the home of Sirius Black. Moody is also involved later that school year at the battle in the Department of Mysteries. He, along with Sirius Black, Nymphadora Tonks, Remus Lupin, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and Albus Dumbledore, arrive to save Harry from Death Eaters who have arrived to steal the prophecy of Harry's birth. The prophecy is destroyed an Sirius Black is killed, and Voldemort and Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange escape, but Moody is able to help capture the rest, including Lucius Malfoy.Moody appears at the end of Harry's sixth and final year at Hogwarts, to attend the funeral of Albus Dumbledore. A few months later, he again arrives at Harry's home on Privet Drive, to escort him to safety at the home of the Weasley family. Unfortunately, Moody himself is killed en route by Voldemort. In a final act of disrespect, Ministry of Magic official Dolores Umbridge steals his magical eye and uses it to see people outside her office. When Harry, Ron and Hermione are forced to break into the Ministry, Harry discovers the disembodied eye, and steals it back. He later buries it in the woods to give Moody the closest thing he can give him to a proper burial.
