Sybil Patricia Trelawney has been Divinations teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for nearly sixteen years. In that time, she has gained a reputation as a fraud, and is constantly being looked down upon by Professor McGonagall. However, Trelawney is not totally inept, as is shown twice in the series. It was she who made the prediction about Harry Potter and Voldemort, as well as the prediction about the escape of Peter Pettigrew.Still, several people, including Dolores Umbridge and Hermione Granger, find Professor Trelawney a bit of a joke. Hermione leaves Divination in her third year, and turns her attention more towards Ancient Runes, which she finds more practical. And Umbridge, during her reign of terror, inspects Trelawneys classes repeatedly. Flustered by this, the unfortunate teacher finds she is unable to think, with tragic results.Sybil Trelawney is portrayed on film by Emma Thompson.
