After realizing she was pregnant, Esme ran away from home and gave birth to a son, who died of a lung infection. Esme attempted to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff. Esme was presumed dead and taken to the morgue, but her heart was still beating.Carlisle didn't want her to die, so he chose to change her into a vampire like Edward, who was the first human Carlisle had changed and Esme the second. Carlisle and Esme fell in love and were married. Although Esme was sad that she couldn't have any more children, Carlisle reassured her they could adopt, like he did Edward.
