Royce King II was the son of the wealthy bank owner. The King family was the highest of high society in Rochester, New York during the Great Depression where they shared the town with the Hale family. Rosalie Hale's father worked at the Kings' bank and so it was that Rosalie would be set up to meet Royce. The Hale family strived for renown and wealth, Rosalie marrying into the King family was the perfect opportunity.Royce King first met Rosalie when she came into the bank with her father's lunch, overdressed for just a trip down the road by order of her mother. Rosalie was the most beautiful girl in Rochester and Royce marveled at her beauty. He sent dozens of red roses to the Hale household each evening since his sighting of her and Rosalie's room overflowed with them. It switched to violets when he told her that her eyes were the color of violets.They were engaged two months after having known each other and he was a distant fiance. Claiming he had other responsibilities, he set her aside. They were to be wed in April or May (the book is unclear exactly when). But one night when Rosalie was walking home from her friend's, Royce was drunk with his friends. He and his friends attacked and raped Rosalie Hale then left her for dead.Rosalie was found by Carlisle Cullen near death in the street, and he changed her into a vampire.
