Charlie Swan is Chief of the Police Department in Forks, Washington and is the father of Isabella Bella Marie Swan, his child with Renee (Higginbotham) Dwyer, his high school sweetheart. The pair married right out of high school. Their marriage lasted 6 months. Renee was always the type to want to do things, go places, and see people. Charlie's main goals in life are to be there for people. His favorite hobbies are fishing and watching televised sports, and he harbors no small disdain for big cities, like nearby Seattle. When Renee began to long for higher society life than city of Forks was able to provide, Renee decided to divorce Charlie, and taking Bella with her, first to Califorina, and then, to Phoenix, Arizona, which is where Bella did most of her growing up. Charlie decided to remain right where they would be able to find him whenever they needed him, and where the citizens of Forks needed him, too, as they decided to promote him in their police department all the way up to become the Chief. For years, Charlie would not only spend time with them both on the phone, but, would insist on spending weeks at a time with Bella during the summer, who would travel to Forks to be with him. Unfortunately, due to Bella's growing familiarization with places hot and sunny, and her growing disdain for all things wet and cold, and the fact that Forks, Washington is perhaps the rainiest, most overcast city in the contiguous United States, those summer visits eventually came to an end.Nevertheless, when Renee finally decided to remarry when Bella was seventeen to a much more prospective soul mate named Phil Dwyer, whose career choice of being a professional athlete gave him more than ample opportunity to take Renee travelling with him quite often, the relationship with Bella was still strong enough that Charlie immediately opened his doors to his daughter, and she immediately went to live with him. When Bella returned to Forks, she is welcomed by Charlie's best friend, Billy Black, and his son, Jacob. Bella and Jacob were childhood friends, but they weren't serious. When Bella starts Forks High School, she meets the mysterious Cullen family, and is especially intrigued with Edward. When Edward and Bella begin dating, however, Charlie begins to see past Edward's good, and begins to focus only on the things about Edward that appear to him to be bad, and begins to offer Bella his advice about it. The more serious their relationship becomes, the more prominently Charlie begins to advise against it, but being a man more of action than of words, he is always there to pick up the pieces whenever he can see that Bella's is sad. When the Cullens leave Forks, Bella is devastated. Jacob spends more time with Bella, hoping they could have a more serious relationship. When her behavior becomes too much for Charlie, he doesn't know whether to send Bella to Jacksonville, Florida to live with her mother and stepfather or have her institutionalized. When Bella runs away from home for 3 days, Charlie grounds her when she returns. When the Cullens return to Forks, Bella chooses Edward over Jacob. Charlie is disappointed, but he supports Bella's decision and gives her away at her wedding. When Bella became pregnant, she lied to Charlie about her condition, saying she had an illness. After Renesmee was born, Jacob imprinted on her, and he was worried about the Cullens leaving again because of Charlie, so he went to his house to tell him he didn't live in the world he thought he lived in. Afterward, Jacob undressed and phased into his wolf form. Charlie was horrified, and he visited Bella and told her about it.Charlie had some familiarity with the supernatural, suspecting the Cullens may not be entirely human, and whatever Bella could tell him would be on a need-to-know basis. After meeting Renesmee, Edward and Bella tell him she's Edward's niece and they adopted her. Charlie doesn't know what to think, but he loves and accepts her. He and Bella also agree not to tell her mother, because she wouldn't be able to handle it.Bella inherited Charlie's mind-shield, but hers is much stronger - especially after becoming a vampire. In Breaking Dawn, Charlie spends more time with Sue Clearwater, eventually becoming more romantically involved with her.
