Executive Officer (XO) Mike Slattery is the second-in-command on the USS Nathan James. While willing to adhere to the oath he swore when he joined the Navy, he shows occasional doubt in Com. Tom Chandler's decisions and thought processes. Still, he follows orders and his trust in Chandler's decisions increase with each successful outcome.Slattery found out that his son died in the outbreak after they'd already deployed on the USS Nathan James, but his wife and daughters managed to get to safety. This has an effect on his actions when they encounter a dictatorial drug lord who has enslaved an island and raped the daughters of the former mayor of the city. He managed to convince Chandler to go back and free the girls, and the entire village, which they did and which led to the drug lord's death.Slattery is a significant factor in the crew of the USS Nathan James taking back their ship after it was taken hostage by the Maryland State troopers, on orders from Amy Granderson. Slattery helps care for Dr. Quincy when he is shot by the troopers and kept alive by Dr. Rios, and manages to hide the Primordial virus samples smuggled out of the lab by Dr. Rios, in an overhead pipe--right under the troopers' noses. This was done due to Quincy's suggestion before he died. When Lt. Foster is taken back to Avrocet and Dr. Himata on Amy Granderson's orders, Slattery is locked in a room. He escapes through a hidden trap door and makes it to the security room, where he could watch the entire ship activity via security cameras. He used these cameras to assist the three crew members (including O'Connor, who jumped off the ship before everyone was herded inside and was the catalyst for the crew taking the ship back) who escaped the troopers and got weapons from the armory for the rest of the captive crew.He is part of the land teams who deliver the cure in Norfolk,VA, and he goes to the Deer Park safe camp to look for his wife and daughters. When he and Tex arrive the camp is empty, like people left in a hurry. Tex finds the tent where Slattery's family stayed, along with a family photo album. Slattery is stunned to see the album and almost cries when he finds a sweatshirt belonging to one of his children. He admits to Tex that he is tempted to ask Chandler for permission to remain behind in Norfolk and look for his family.Slattery decides to return to the Nathan James and helps the crew provide cover for Chandler and the team that boards the hospital ship Solace, which contains the components of the Norfolk lab that could be used to mass produce the cure. He is also part of the crew trying to find the British Navy sub that contains a ragtag mercenary group of people who want to destroy the cure so they could maintain their status as Chosen people who were immune to the virus.
