Dr. Quincy Tophet is a British scientist who assists Dr. Rachel Scott in her quest to find a cure for the rapidly-spreading virus that has killed most of the world's population. It is eventually revealed that he was working with the Russians, and was tasked with bringing them Dr. Scott and her research samples. Tophet is discovered trying to kidnap Dr. Scott and subsequently held in a stockade. He tells them that the Russians have his wife and daughter and threatened to kill them if he didn't help them get Dr. Scott so that the Russians could be the only people who had the cure. When two Navy officers were sent as decoys to blow up part of the Russian ship, Tophet assumes that they have already killed his wife and child. He is kept in quarantine under arrest for most of the remainder of the trip, and is not allowed to work with Dr. Scott on the cure. He asks for someone good with whom he could play chess. He tries to retaliate by planting seeds of doubt about Dr. Scott's progress and what Cdr. Chandler has told the crew with Bacon, the man assigned to play chess with him. It worked, as Bacon joined a group that wanted to leave the ship, but they changed their minds and re-enlisted. Chandler told Tophet to stop talking to his crew and took away the chess set, leaving him once again in solitary.Tophet is pulled out of solitary to translate the radio calls intercepted by the Russians, who attacked a group of Navy guys on a rescue mission on a boat. His only request as payment was that they make sure to kill the Russian commander when they catch him.Tophet is surprised by the appearance of his wife and daughter, who were rescued from the Russian ship. He thanked Chandler for that, and for allowing his family to live together on the ship.Tophet tries to protect the lab when the Maryland State troopers take the Nathan James hostage, and is shot in the abdomen. The wound is very serious and he almost dies until Doc Rios plugs the wound at gunpoint from the troopers. Rios keeps him alive, on orders from the tropers, so that they could find out where the Primordial strain was located on the ship. Tophet learns that Rios smuggled the Primordial strain from the lab, in his medical kit, before the troopers and Dr. Hamada found it; he tells Slattery to hide it in a large overhead pipe. The head trooper discovers that Ava and Kelly Tophet are his family and holds his wife Kelly at gunpoint in an attempt to get Tophet to tell them where the Primordial is hidden. Tophet mouths an apology to his wife, tells the trooper that he (Tophet) will never tell, and pulls the plug out of his wound, which causes him to bleed out and die.
