CHIEF ENGINEER'S MATE MILES EDWARD O'BRIEN (Colm Meaney) became one of Starfleet's most celebrated petty officers. He served as Chief Transporter Technician aboard USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, where he first served with then-Lieutenant Worf and also met and married his wife, Keiko. Following the successful conclusion of the Bajoran War for Independence and Starfleet's takeover of the Cardassian orbiting platform Tirak Nor (renamed Star Base Deep Space Nine), Starfleet reassigned Chief O'Brien to that station as its Chief of Operations. He served there for seven years, during the Dominion War. At the end of that conflict, he requested and got an assignment as instructor at Starfleet Academy in San Francisco, Alta California, Earth.Shortly after his arrival on Deep Space Nine, a battle broke out upon a shocking discovery: a stable wormhole! Chief O'Brien made the quick improvisation by which Major Kira Nerys, First Officer and Bajoran Liaison, broke DS9 out of orbit around Bajor and relocated it to the Denarios Belt, where it could guard the wormhole. DS9 guards that wormhole entrance to this day.His best friend is Julian Bashir, the medical officer. After initially clashing, they became friends after Bashir saves O'Brien following an assassination attempt. They visit holosuites together to re-enact famous battles in history and also enjoy darts and racquetball.Miles is very inventive and able to think quickly in the face of disaster. He is called upon often to solve technical issues or defend the station or his comrades. He also has a strong sense of right and wrong. Background: He was born in Ireland on Earth in 2328 and can trace his ancestry back to Irish king Brian Boru in the 11th century. He has two brothers. He opted to join Starfleet instead of pursuing a career as a concert cellist, against his father's wishes. He is married to Keiko Ishikawa and has a daughter, Molly, and a son, Kirayoshi. His son grew to term in the womb of Bajoran Kira Nerys after Keiko was injured in a shuttle accident. One of his first assignments was junior tactical officer aboard the USS Rutledge under the command of Benjamin Maxwell. He enjoys outdoor activities like kayaking and hiking.
