Major Kira Nerys is the Bajoran liaison officer on station Deep Space 9. After joining the Bajoran Resistance when she was 12 during the Cardassian Occupation, she became a colonel in the Bajoran Militia, eventually serving aboard DS9.Initially she is hostile to the Federation's presence on Bajor, but she and Captain Benjamin Sisko eventually form a partnership, with Kira serving as his second in command. Their relationship is complicated by Sisko's role as Emissary of the Prophets, a revered figure in her religion.Kira's best friend is Jadzia Dax, and later her new host, Ezri Tigan. They share their romantic entanglements and Jadzia encourages Kira not to be so serious.Kira develops an unusual connection to Miles O'Brien when his wife, Keiko is injured in an accident and their unborn son Kirayoshi is transferred to Kira's womb until his birth in a traditional Bajoran birthing ceremony. She views Tekeny Ghemor as a father figure, even though he is Cardassian, after he helps her out of a kidnapping plot. Background: She was born in or around 2343 in the Dahkur Province on Bajor and grew up in a Singha refugee camp. Her mother Kira Meru was taken by the Cardassians to serve as a comfort woman, when Kira Nerys was three, but her father, Kira Taban, told his daughter that her mother had died. She has two brothers, Kira Reon and Kira Pohl.Kira Nerys has a series of relationships, but her most enduring is the one with Odo, the Changeling head of security, that develops over time.Although she believes strongly in Bajoran independence and fought for it for years, she is less of a religious fanatic than many of her countrymen. She has a strong lingering hatred of the Cardassians for their subjugation of her people, but she attempts to get along with any she encounters out of respect for Sisco and her position.
