Lt. Commander Data is an android who serves as operations officer and second officer aboard the Enterprise-D. Data has the tendency to give excessively long and elaborate explanations, not understanding the concept of boredom or efficient communication; he eventually learned to dose his information more effectively. He is fond of assessing the likelihood of events with percentages, although he actually isn't fond of anything, because he doesn't have emotions. Like Pinocchio, Data wonders what it'd be like to be a real boy, although in almost all ways he already appears to be one.He has an aging program that simulates the passage of time on his appearance and another program (governed by a Fourier series) that makes his blinking appear random. He has fake tears and appears to breathe and have a pulse. He also does not require sleep, and frequently stands night watch on the bridge. He studies humans obsessively in an attempt to be more like them, and is known for his terrible attempts at humor and inability to get a joke. Emotions which are complex and context-sensitive present the greatest challenges, for example, he lacks understanding that a funny situation often comes from a spontaneous incident (like, someone accidentally falling in cold water), which cannot be replicated by simply repeating the outcome (i.e. throwing someone in cold water); while trying to mimic a sense of humor, he would often laugh on when the other person had switched to a serious topic. Although sorrow and sense of loss are other emotions that Data does not generally experience, he assured his friends that the absence of important people in his life would definitely not go unnoticed by his programming. Despite that, he was unable to form and sustain a romantic relationship with a female crew member, since the concepts of love and care were simply out of his reach, although he does test the boundaries of his fully functional physical abilites. He has super-human strength, can serve as a floatation device, and is unaffected by disease, radiation, telepathy or mind-control.Background: He was created in the Omicron Theta science colony by Dr. Noonien Soong and Dr. Juliana O'Donnell Soong Tainer around 2336 and raised' by them until they fled, de-activating him.He was found by crew of the USS Tripoli and permanently re-activated February 2, 2338.A total of six androids were created by the Soongs, although only three had fully functional positronic brains. He has an evil twin brother named Lore who possesses an emotion chip.Data is made up of 24.6 kilograms of tripolymer composites, 11.8 kilograms of molybdenum-cobalt alloys and 1.3 kilograms of bioplast sheeting and weighs approximately 100 kilograms. His brain is capable of running sixty trillion operations per second.Data, perhaps in gratitude to the Starfleet officers who found him, joined Starfleet, graduating in 2345. At the time, Dr. Bruce Maddox objected to his application, reasoning that Data was not a sentient being . In 2365, Dr. Maddox again pressed his claim, this time legally, when he forced a hearing on the matter after Data attempted to resign from Starfleet to stop a transfer order and experimental refit. JAG officer Captain Phillipa Louvois presided, Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard acted as counsel for the defense, and Commander William T Riker was forced to represent the plaintiff. Dr. Maddox's claim was that since Data was not sentient, he was therefore property, and could neither resign nor refuse the transfer. His best friend is chief engineer Geordi La Forge, with whom he enjoys role playing as Sherlock Holmes on the Holodeck. He has a daughter , Lal, whom he creates using technology similar to his, but who quickly evolves, drawing the attention of Starfleet. He has a cat named Spot.
