Arrow - Season 1 Episode 22: Darkness on the Edge of Town
Arrow is based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, a costumed crime-fighter. Season 1 premiered on The CW on October 10, 2012. The series focus on Oliver Queen, billionaire playboy, who spends 5 years shipwrecked on a mysterious island. Showing all facets of the mysterious loner, this realistic drama follows the charismatic but shallow Oliver that disappeared, the hardened Oliver that returned and the Oliver that has been forged into the weapon against injustice known as... 'the Arrow'.
"The Darkness on the Edge of Town" is jam-packed full of plot, and most of that plot is heavy stuff. Fortunately, to lighten the load, there are some moments of pure physical comedy in there.
This [episode] was just a matter of the central characters playing catch-up to the audience, learning all they need to know for the big finale. But, boy, was it fun to watch.
Not only have the major secrets of the season been spilled, paving the way for some exciting climaxes in both past and present day, but the personal conflicts seem to have reached a precipice as well.
My concerns about the hackneyed nature of Malcolm's plot aside, there's little in 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' to find fault with. It's a funny, dramatic, romantic, action-packed episode of Arrow that reins in the show's weaknesses.
'Darkness on the Edge of Town' managed an incredibly propulsive plot quite well, even if some of the less prominent storylines still felt as though they were lagging behind.
The tonal shift is made pretty apparent from the title alone, "Darkness on the Edge of Town," but the bleakness is overwhelmingly obvious by episode's end.
