Wayne Unser is a native of Charming and its Chief of Police when the series begins. He is on the Sons' payroll not to pad his pockets but because he believes the club keeps its business dealings outside city limits and keeps Charming safe. Unser has a long uneasy history with club president Clay Morrow, possibly because of his deep affection for Clay's wife, Gemma. She trusts him with a dark secret in season two. Unser tries to do what he believes is right, even if it isn't legal, to protect Charming and its residents, and is often put in a difficult position by his longstanding allegiance to the club. He will go against the club in some cases where his conscience dictates, and expects to reap the consequences. When the series begins, Unser is scheduled to retire and turn over the force to Deputy David Hale, who is much more suspicious of the club. Unser has also recently been diagnosed with cancer and uses marijuana to cope with the pain. Background: He owns Unser Shipping, a trucking company. He was a US Marine during the Vietnam war and is in his 50s. He is estranged from Della Unser and they have two unnamed daughters.
