JORAN BELAR, or JORAN DAX as he became known for six months, played host to the Dax symbiont without proper authority with the death of Torias Dax. Worse yet, he committed murder against the Trill doctor who recommended against his continuance in the Joining Program. In fact Joran Dax was a homicidal maniac, determined to kill anyone who got in his way.The Symbiosis Commission regarded this as an untenable scandal. Joran should have rejected the symbiont within days. Instead he continued for six months. Revelation that the Commission standards might have been more rigorous than necessary would have unleashed bedlam in Trill society. For in fact such rigorous standards were necessary, not on the ground of protecting symbionts, but strictly on account of the limited availability of symbionts. The politics of envy produced a threat that could have shaken the very foundations of the Joining Program. So the Commission tried to suppress Joran's memories. But eighty-five years later, with the death of Curzon Dax (Joran's successor) and the transfer of the symbiont to its seventh official host, Jadzia, the memories began to re-emerge. That re-emergence threw Jadzia and Dax out of equilibrium and nearly killed them both. But Jadzia Dax was an officer in Starfleet, as Curzon had been before her. So she had friends. And her friends threatened to create a planet-wide scandal if the Commission's doctors did not at once remove the memory block and let Jadzia come to terms with the history of Joran. Only then could she return to equilibrium.Jadzia managed the memory reintegration, and returned to equilibrium and good health. When next Jadzia took part in Zhian'tara, Commander Benjamin Sisko embodied Joran. The experience nearly killed Sisko.Jadzia virtually ignored Joran for the rest of her life. When at length Ezri Teigan became joined (and took the name Ezri Dax), she found herself investigating a serial murder. Serial murder was the sort of crime that belonged to pre-Eugenics-War Earth, not a modern, enlightened society like the Federation or even Earth under the United Nations government. So Ezri had to perform the rite of separation to let Joran personify himself separately--so that Joran could advise her on the mind-set of the sort of sentient being who likes nothing better than to kill other sentient beings. Joran surprised Ezri, and everyone else, when he correctly identified the killer--a Vulcan.
