Norrington first appears in Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl as an enemy of Jack Sparrow. He is being promoted to commodore on the day of Jacks arrival, and promptly arrests the pirate after he rescues Elizabeth Swann, the governor's daughter, from drowning. When Elizabeth is later captured by Hector Barbossa, Norrington attempts to find her, using methods the blacksmith Will Turner deems not good enough. Despite these seemingly unconcerned attempts to find her, James Norrington still loves her just as much as Will. James Norrington first sailed to the Caribbean as a Lieutenant aboard the HMS Dauntless with settlers to establish the settlement of Port Royal. Respected by Governor Swann and a popular officer, he was promoted to the rank of Captain at some point during the 8 years between that first voyage and the arrival of Jack Sparrow in Port Royal.Captain Norrington's policy was a zero tolerance approach to piracy. He always had a soft spot for Elizabeth Swann, the governor's daughter and on the day he was promoted again to Commodore at the start of the main time frame of the films, he asked Elizabeth to marry him. Norrington was presented with a beautiful new sword made by Will Turner as a mark of his promotion. However that first day was not to be uneventful for the new Commodore, Jack Sparrow arrived in port Royal, Elizabeth almost fell to her death from the fort, she was held hostage by Sparrow who was then arrested. After a long day the settlement was attacked, during the night by the pirates under Captain Barbossa who kidnapped Elizabeth. Following this, Sparrow escaped and tricked the Commodore into letting his guard down so that Sparrow could steal the Interceptor, the fastest ship in the Caribbean.Upon Elizabeth's rescue, she agreed to marry Norrington; only to change her mind and admit that she really loved Will Turner. Norrington therefore poured all of his energies into trying to find Jack Sparrow and bring him to justice; this made him so obsessive that he forced his men to sail through a hurricane, with disasterous results. Norrington then resigned his comission in the Navy for fear of being dishonourably discharged and with an arrest warrant on his head for not pursuing Sparrow (on an earlier occasion) he made his way to the pirate port of Tortuga.Destitute and humiliated, Norrington was forced to take a job aboard the Black Pearl as a deckhand. He overheard Elizabeth and Jack talking about the letters of marque signed by the king, giving full pardon and comission as a privateer on behalf of England. These letters were offered to Jack by Lord Beckett of the East India Trading Company in exchange for his compass. Norrington stole the letters and also the heart of Davy Jones, which he delivered to the East India Company in exchange for the letters of marque.Lord Beckett recomissioned and promoted Norrington to the rank of Admiral. It is interesting to note that throughout the third film Norrington's uniform looks a little big for him. Norrington was chosen to command the guard of marines which Beckett sent to oversee the Flying Dutchman under Mercer, Beckett's second in command. Norrington soon realised the horror that Becket was able to unleash upon the world and began to wonder if he had 'chosen the right side'. When Elizabeth was taken prisoner aboard the Dutchman, the Admiral helped them to escape, only to be killed by 'Bootstrap' Bill Turner at the blade of the very sword that Norrington had been given when promoted.
