Father Gabriel Stokes is the priest at St. Sarah's Episcopal Church. He is rescued from walkers by Rick and his group, who had recently escaped Terminus. He offers them shelter in the church, but is very jumpy around walkers. His church altar has a lot of opened, empty cans of food around the perimeter. This raises Rick's suspicions, who tells his son Carl that he doesn't trust the priest.Father Stokes takes them to the abandoned food bank, which he explains had been overrun with walkers and thus he couldn't get there to get more food. While in the food bank they come across walkers, including a female one with long hair, wearing glasses, a dress, and a long pearl necklace. The walker comes directly after the priest, who runs away in a panic. Rick kills the walker and again finds the priest's behavior suspicious. While examining the church, Rick comes across a picture of Gabriel with a member of his former congregation--a woman with long hair, glasses, and wearing a dress and a long pearl necklace.Later on, Carl shows Rick scratches that he found on the shuttered windows outside the church, along with the carved message, You'll burn for this. Neither of them understood the message, but knew that Gabriel probably did. Rick finally cornered the priest and asked what the message and scratches meant. The priest confessed to the group that when the walkers came, members of his congregation were trying to get inside the church for shelter. Gabriel confessed that he locked the doors every evening and heard the people screaming for help, but refused to open the door because there were too many of them. He heard the walkers attack and kill them, and said that Rick and his group were sent by God to punish him for letting so many people die. After an injured Bob was dumped in the yard of the church, Gabriel offered Bob the use of the couch in his office, saying it wasn't much, but it may help make Bob more comfortable as he dies. Sasha thanks him for this kindness. Gabriel told Rick where to find the empty elementary school where Gareth and his band of displaced Terminus cannibals were staying. When Rick, Sasha, and Abraham slaughter Gareth and his people after they tried to take the rest of the group hostage in the church, Gabriel comes out and looks at the bloody remains in horror. He says This is the Lord's house in a shocked voice but Maggie corrects him and says, No, it's just four walls and a roof. Later on, he sits on the outside church steps with Michonne and says that he still hears the voices of the people who were screaming for him to let them inside the church. He wonders if they'll ever go away. Michonne tells him that they'll never go away, but they'll get quieter after a while.
