Falling Skies opens in the aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. Survivors of an alien attack on earth gather together to fight for their lives and fight back. Each day is a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people while engaging in a campaign against the occupying alien force, whose purpose remains a mystery.
There's something enjoyably retro about TNT's "Falling Skies," an old-school, B-grade sci-fi invasion series that's more reminiscent of the original 1980's "V" than the recently canceled ABC remake.
Despite the high stakes of the story and the frequent violence, the tone is placid and slightly monotonous, as if we were watching the Walton family at the end of the world.
Falling Skies generates its own excitement, very much worth the ride, like Lost and Jericho, to watch characters develop as they struggle under confusing and life-threatening circumstances.
I lost count of the times I paused episodes to try to understand an inexplicable moment or to complain to my couchmate about a predictable development.
