Matt Mason is the youngest son of Tom Mason, he is eight when the series begins (born in 1999). His mother Rebecca was killed in the initial invasion. His oldest brother Hal was a senior in high school when the aliens attacked and his older brother Ben is missing when the series begins.Because of the loss of his mother, Matt worries every time his dad or brothers go out on a mission. Matt desperately wishes for everything to go back to normal. He struggles to understand why he can't have all the things his brothers had when they were his age, like a birthday party or a new skateboard. Despite being too young to join the fight alongside his father and brother, Matt wants to help, even if it means going against his father's wishes.He wants to contribute and help defend himself, but his dad is wary of even giving him a weapon.
