John Pope is a convicted felon who sees the aftermath of the alien invasion as an opportunity. He considers it the best thing that ever happened to him. He is always looking out for himself and the chance to make a score. He is introduced to the 2nd Massachusetts Militia Regiment when his band of marauders takes some hostage, including Tom and Hal Mason, Karen, Anthony and Dai.Other members of his group include Maggie, Cueball and Billy, John's unscrupulous brother.Pope later joins the 2nd Mass as their cook, a skill he learned in prison. He explains his decision to Tom: I think I'll rest for a little while. Being the leader of a post-apocalyptic gang of outlaws has been exhausting. Eventually, he and his band of Berserkers, including Crazy Lee, Tector and Lyle, become a valued fighting arm of the 2nd Mass. Although Pope constantly butts heads with both Tom Mason and Daniel Weaver, they appreciate his take-no-prisoners approach to fighting and respect that he has killed several skitters by himself. He seems to have an especially strong hatred of the aliens that trumps any other issues he has with people.Pope is a rabble-rouser, agitator and malcontent, but his ability to scheme and deal make him an asset to the 2nd Mass. He claims to hate Tom Mason, but the two men also share a grudging respect for each other. Background: Has an ex-wife and a son, Brandon, and daughter, Tanya, whom he hasn't seen for five several years when the aliens attack. In season three he shares the reason for his incarceration with Tom Mason, and although it involves someone's death, it's not what Tom was expecting.
