Tom Mason was a professor of American History at Boston University before the alien invasion. He often draws parallels between famous battles in U.S. history and current fights against the aliens, using his knowledge of military tactics to the humans' advantage. He has no experience as a leader or fighter, but his intellect and passion for his family translate into a feeling of wanting to help, defend and protect fellow humans, who are drawn to those qualities and follow him. Tom is an optimist and often tries to remind his fellow humans what they're fighting for and that they must rely on each other.He becomes the second in command of the 2nd Massachusetts Militia Regiment, to Captain Daniel Weaver, soon after the series begins. Tom forms an uneasy friendship with Weaver, who comes to rely on Tom's cool head and battle insights, even though he is initially skeptical of his fighting and leadership skills.Tom is also drawn to Anne Glass, who becomes the group's doctor, with whom he shares the bond of having lost a spouse in the invasion.John Pope, the rebel outlaw leader, is a constant thorn in Tom's side, but also a begrudging ally.Background: Tom's wife Rebecca was killed during the initial alien attacks, leaving Tom to care for his three sons by himself. He has a somewhat difficult relationship with Hal, the oldest, who is adjusting to becoming a man under his father's watchful eye. Ben, the middle child, is abducted by the aliens and harnessed when the series begins, fundamentally changing who he is. Matt, the youngest, struggles with being thought of a kid and wanting to fight, even though he is very young. Tom had a difficult childhood. His father was an abusive drunk who owned a hardware store. Tom says: There was nothing idyllic about my childhood, except maybe I survived it. He is in his 40s.
