Captain Daniel Weaver a leader in the 2nd Massachusetts Militia Regiment. He's an army veteran from the Gulf War who lost his family in the invasion. He initially clashes with Tom Mason, the former history professor with no combat experience, but eventually the two form grudging bonds of respect, finding that each lends valuable insight to leadership and battle.Weaver is gruff and guarded with his emotions. He tends to see things in a military light and sometimes has scorn for the civilians who he views as getting in the way of his military objectives. His early impulse is to attack the aliens, but Tom Mason helps him see the tactical advantages in a more measured approach. Weaver is concerned first and foremost with protecting his people, and is a good leader. He has a soft spot for a young fighter named Jimmy and serves as a father figure to him. Background: His youngest daughter Sophia was captured by the aliens and harnessed and later died when he removed her harness. He tells Tom that he is holding out hope that his wife and daughter Jeanne are still alive, but there is more to the story that he doesn't not initially reveal. He was active duty in the army for eight years, and six years in the army reserve. After his discharge, he was a building contractor, which lends him valuable insight into the Espheni construction. Weaver takes his orders from Colonel Porter.
