Walt is on board Oceanic Flight 815 with his estranged father Michael when it crashes and they end up on the island. He's accompanied by his dog, Vincent, who also survived the crash. Walt was living in Australia with his mother, who had taken him with her to Amsterdam when she left Michael in New York for a new job, and subsequently moved to Australia. Walt's mother dodged Michael's attempts to see and connect with Walt, but Michael gained custody of Walt when Walt's mother died. The father and son, who were strangers to one another, were headed back to the U.S. together when the plane crashed. Walt is a brave kid who forms a bond with Locke almost immediately -- something Michael resents but can do little to control. Walt is seen as special among the survivors -- and perhaps others -- and becomes a little-seen but critical part of the fate of both the survivors and the island.
