Elizabeth Libby Smith was a survivor from the tail section of Flight 815 -- a tailie -- but it is never made clear why she was in Australia. She is in the flashbacks of other characters -- notably Hurley's, when she is seen as a patient in the mental institution where he was also a patient, and in Desmond's, in which she gives Desmond her dead husband's sailboat to use in his race around the world. The boat, after getting caught in a storm, is what brought Desmond to the island. On the island, Libby is friendly and kind, and sparks a romantic relationship with Hurley.
