Desmond Hume is the man found living inside The Hatch at the beginning of the third season. He landed on the island three years before Oceanic Flight 815 crashed there. He was trying to win a sailing race around the world when his boat was caught in a fierce storm, he was knocked unconscious and wound up on the island.Years earlier, Desmond became a monk after getting cold feet before his planned wedding to his longtime girlfriend, Ruth. He was kicked out monastery after drinking too much of the wine he was meant to be bottling. On his way out, he met Penelope Widmore, the daughter of Charles Widmore, and the two began to date for a couple of years. After dating this long, Desmond met Penelope's father to ask for her hand in marriage, but Charles did not think Desmond was good enough for his daughter. Desmond reflected on his poor state and apparently agreed, breaking up with Penelope.Later, intent on proving himself to Penelope and upsetting her father, Desmond signed up for a sailing race around the world which Charles was hosting. He was competing in the race when his boat crashed. Since then, he's been in the underground station pressing a button every 108 minutes in order to save the world, as he has been instructed to do by a man named Kelvin who found Desmond and trained him on the station's purpose. When the survivors of the plane crash arrive and cause some initial problems, Desmond tells them about pressing the button and why it has to happen, then tries to leave.
