After star quarterback Jason Street is injured in the first football game of the season, Matt Saracen is forced to step into his shoes as the starter of the Dillon High School Panthers. Saracen is a shy, humble kid who is not particularly comfortable in the limelight. He's also not the greatest quarterback and stumbles early and often as he takes over the role from Street.In addition to taking over the most prominent position for the team that is the central obsession for his entire town, Matt is dealing with his own personal struggles as he lives with and cares for his elderly grandmother while his father is off serving in Iraq. Matt has general issues with abandonment as his mother left when he was about 10, once telling Coach Taylor, Everybody leaves me! What's wrong with me? Taylor serves as a bit of a father figure to Matt, mentoring him through the transition from being a backup to being the starter and a leader to his teammates.Matt also develops a relationship with Julie Taylor, his coach's daughter, which causes some tension between him and his coach, and with Julie's mother Tami. Matt is initially a bit of a social outcast, along with his best friend Landry Clarke, but all that changes without notice when he is launched into the town's most high profile position.
