The Leftovers - Season 2 Episode 7: A Most Powerful Adversary
Based on the bestselling 2011 novel by Tom Perrotta, the series focuses on denizens of the fictional town of Mapleton, three years after the fateful October 14 day when 140 million people – 2% of the world’s population – disappeared without a trace. They must begin to rebuild their lives after the loss of more than 100 people.
That Kevin chooses Creepy Grandpa and the cup of poison is pretty interesting in that what he's doing sort of mirrors the big 'embrace and live within the various inexplicable mysteries of life' theme of The Leftovers.
Back at Virgil's, the heart-stopping - literally, for Kevin and Virgil - final moments of the episode only take a few minutes but are so packed with drama and shock that it feels like they unfold in slow motion.
Yes, I'm fully aware that I started this review right at the end of the hour. It's kind of hard NOT to want to start at the end and work your way back into it, you know? It was that amazing.
In the end, Kevin does what he does because he believes it's the best way to be free, to be found, to be saved. Only time will tell if his faith is rewarded or if he'll pay for his mistake with his life.
The Leftovers explores how we live with the unknowable, and it's doing so with great characters and fantastic writing and across-the-board stellar performances.
