Season 4 opens with a train colliding with a truck filled with explosives. A man is shot. Over the phone, Jack Bauer hears the screams of his kidnapped sweetheart. Later, Jack is in trouble with his supervisor, and he's on the trail of a killer.
Perhaps we can attribute the success of season four not only to its ingenious plot twists and its unrepentant determination to shock its audience, but to its unique and complex cast of characters.
The first three hours have all the edge-of-your-seat thrills that marked the show's first season, particularly in a train crash that begins tonight's episode and scenes at the end of the first hour.
But while it's difficult to fault the writers for staying close to surefire sensationalist tricks certain to raise your heart rate a notch or two, it's still jolting to find yourself back in their ruthless company once again.
