This dramedy chronicles the carnal escapades of Hank Moody, a self-loathing, alcoholic New York City novelist who attempts to repair his damaged relationships with his daughter and her mother while combating sex addiction, a budding drug problem, and the seeming inability to avoid making bad decisions.
Having generally worn out its welcome several seasons earlier, Californication ended its seventh season run Sunday with the kind of whimper Hank Moody himself would disdain.
Alas, the swan-song episodes is emblematic of what's been fun about the show but also the balancing weight of what's wrong with it, including a slightly cloying aspect to the central relationship that makes it hard to care about its outcome.
What makes the complacent ending sting is knowing that "Californication" was at one point a complex program with dark, human undertones and aninventive presentation.
