Deputy U.S. Marshal Tim Gutterson is a colleague of Raylan Givens, but the pair isn't necessarily close as both square-jawed lawman would often rather let their firearms do the talking. The difference is that Tim, a former Army Ranger and an expert sniper, has a military discipline and by-the-book approach that Raylan oftentimes lacks. This makes him an excellent complement to Raylan in and out of the office, often defusing his coworker's more questionable impulses -- or at least forcing Raylan to think things out.He has excellent knowledge of the political inner-workings of both Harlan County's law enforcement (which is often crooked) as well as the network of small-to-midsize criminal operations. Tim tends to show up exactly when needed and few are more effective or efficient in a fight, whether the weapons are fists or guns.
