Longtime Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Art Mullen finds his fairly comfortable (though far from quiet world) rocked with the arrival of Raylan Givens, a principled but unruly Marshal sent back to his boyhood home in Harlan County, Kentucky. Mullen had been looking forward to easing into retirement when Givens is assigned back to him.Art predicts that Raylan's arrival will make life in and out of the office much more exciting, and not necessarily in a good way. Sure enough, Givens's return brings action as he locks up or kills (justifiably, of course) many of the criminals he formally called tee-ball teammates, high-school buddies, or longtime acquaintances of the Givens family.Initially, the relationship between Art and Raylan is contentious, but the two quickly develop a strong bond and a mutual respect. That respect doesn't stop Art from doing what he deems right, though -- even if it means suspending Raylan from active duty or reading him the riot act in front of the entire office of Marshals.
