Raylan GIvens is a unconventional, but highly dedicated U.S. Deputy Marshal. After committing a justified shooting in Florida of a mob hit man, he was re-assigned to his home state of Kentucky, specifically the Lexington Office and the office of Chief Deputy Art Mullen. Having grown-up in tiny, crime-ridden Harlan County -- and then having spent an almost equal portion of his life trying to escape from it -- Raylan is initially not pleased to be back where family clans feud and meth labs spout up like weeds.Ghosts from his past include former lovers, a childhood friend now involved in illegal militia activity, and -- perhaps most notably and painfully (though Raylan is loathe to show it) -- a criminal father. None of these reintroductions after decades of distance help Raylan deal with his own persistent anger control issues. Still, Raylan is determined to do his job. Raylan brings an old-time cowboy persona to contemporary Kentucky, including a Stetson hat that he rarely removes and Western style boots. He is also quick on the draw, a skill that comes in handy rather frequently in his hometown.Raylan applies himself diligently to putting bad people behind bars and protecting good people. He is not a perfect peace officer -- and most certainly not a perfect man as his ex-wife Winona well knows -- but he does have a code of honor admired by many.
