Boyd Crowder is easily the smartest, most morally ambiguous and, interestingly, the most dangerous of his longtime criminal clan. Native to the not-so-nice, backwoods portion of Harlan County, he is introduced as a white supremacist with a talent for robbing banks. This immediately puts him in the crosshairs of U.S. Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens, who grew up with Boyd and even worked with him in the local coal mines as a teenager.Boyd, who briefly served in the military, is something of a paradox. He is highly intelligent and educated, though most of Boyd knows was self taught. He quotes scripture and literature with charm and ease -- and then takes out targets with a rocket launcher and shows little remorse for his illegal actions. It could be argued, certainly by Boyd, that he has a code just like Raylan. It is often noted that the two aren't entirely dissimilar -- just different sides of the same coin. He is initially a menacing figure to his former sister-in-law Ava, who shot Boyd's abusive brother before cozying up to Raylan, and a constant thorn in the side of local law enforcement -- even when it appears he has found Jesus and decided to go straight.Ultimately, perhaps, Boyd just wants what everybody else in town desires: to escape his past with his life and, if the good Lord permits, plenty of cash.
