Stan Beeman is a hard-working FBI agent, and an up-and-comer in the department who has just returned from a mutli-year assignment in which he infiltrated a white supremacists group. The job earned him high praise in the department, but has left him with a difficult time readjusting to his normal life. His teenage son doesn't seem particularly close to him and Stan's relationship with his wife is frosty, at best. They hardly talk and Stan keeps himself busy with work, missing dinner with the family so often that it's a surprise when he does show up.Upon returning to the Washington, D.C., area, Stan and his family coincidentally move into a house just across the street from Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings, a pair of KGB spies who have lived in the country for more than a decade. Stan strikes up a quick and seemingly easy friendship with Phillip, who decides it might be easier to manage this proximity by keeping Stan even closer to him rather than retreating and raising suspicion. The guys hang out together, talk extensively and play racquetball, but their closeness makes Elizabeth, Phillip's wife, a bit uneasy. Nonetheless, Elizabeth also strikes up a connection with Stan's wife Sandra. At the beginning of the series, Stan meets his new partner, Chris Amador, who is a bit of a hot head but knows the ropes around the headquarters well and serves as confidant and adviser to Stan as he works to establish himself in the new locale.Stan quickly works on turning Nina, a woman who works in the Soviet embassy, and blackmails her after discovering that she's making purchases in the U.S. and selling them on the black market, which could get her in serious trouble with her government. Nina will prove to be a critical resource.
