Reede Smith was an FBI agent. Earlier in his career, he was injured and became addicted to pain medication. While persuing a suspect, he accidently shot and killed a 12 year old. Because of the actions of the Blake Association, he was never punished for it. On orders from the Blake association, he killed Bob Kirkland, who had discovered the Association's existence. Patrick Jane considered him one of the seven Red John suspects. He was wounded by the first bomb planted by Red John Thomas McAllister, but his pulled to safety by Red John before the second one went off. He was wounded in a shootout with Lisbon, but escaped. Realizing that he was wounded, and had become a liability to the Blake Association, he turned himself in to the CBI. He informed him that Red John was a member of the Blake Association, but did not know his identity. He remains the only one on Jane's list that is still alive.
