LaRoche was the head of the Professional Services division, the CBI's Internal Affairs. He was also briefly the head of the Homicide Division. Years earlier he cut out the tongue of the man who raped his mother, and kept it in a Tupperware container. That was stolen by Brenda Shettrick, and LaRoche enlisted Jane's help in getting it back. Jane tricked LaRoche into thinking that he knew the contents, but he never did. Only Lisbon learned the truth when she went to interview the man who raped LaRoche's mother. After the dissolution of the CBI, he went to work in Internal Affairs for the San Francisco P.D. He described the job as being half the paycheck of the CBI, but with none of the drama. While repaying his debt to Jane, he was killed by a booby trap set by Richard Haibach or his sister.
