Patrick Jane (played by Simon Baker) is a former psychic whose wife and daughter are murdered by the famed serial killer known only as Red John. After the horrific crime is discovered, Jane dedicates his life to hunting down and capturing Red John.Jane offers his services to the CBI (California Bureau of Investigation) and is brought on as a consultant. One of the requirements with his consulting position is he may not carry nor use a firearm. However, Jane has used firearms on a few occasions. He killed Dumar Tanner, the son of one of Red John's partners, when he was threatening Lisbon. He also killed Timothy Carter, who claimed to be Red John. He used a gun to threaten the remaining suspects into taking off their shirts to reveal who was a member of the Blake Association. He also sho Thomas McAllister/Red John, before chasing him down and strangeling him. Our hero helps the bureau solve a large number of cases because of his gift of observation plus various mentalist tricks that he possesses.Unfortunately though, some of Jane's methods and tactics for bringing down the bad guy often fall into the area of unconventional.Jane claims to have been too busy to have ever attended High School (S02, E11 Rose-Colored Glasses).Jane eventually hunts down and kills Red John, who was revealed to be Sheriff Thomas McAllister. Jane then flees to an island in Mexico, where it is learned that speaking Spanish is not one of his many skills. There he meets and befriends a woman named Kim, but does not realize that she is an FBI agent. Later FBI agent Abbott tracks Jane down and offers him a deal; in return for immunity from prosecution for killing McAllister, he most come work for the FBI. After a stint in Federal Detention, Jane takes the deal on the condition that he gets to work with Lisbon.Although is quick to claim that psychics don't exist, he takes no position as to whether or not Santa Claus exists.
