Gale Bertram is the Director of the CBI. He is often frustrated with Jane, but recognizes that Jane is a valuable asset. Jane claims that he likes to annoy Bertram believing him to be not very competent. Despite this, Bertram is one of Jane's seven suspects to be Red John. Bertram is a member of the Blake Association, an organization of corrupt law enforcement, secretly lead by Red John. After escaping the bombs planted by Thomas McAllister, aka Red John, he tried to kill Patrick Jane in his hospital bed. After being stopped by Lisbon, he goes on the run, and Jane tells the media that Bertram is Red John. Bertram lures Jane to the chapel in the cemetery where Jane's wife and daughter are buried. Bertram tells Jane that he is not Red John, then he is shot down by fellow Blake member, Cordero, on the orders of Red John, who then reveals himself as Sheriff Thomas McAllister. Bertram's corruption is ultimately leads to the disbanding of the CBI.
