Julien begins the series as a rookie officer just learning his way around the beat and around the politics of the LAPD. He is a devout Christian with a very strong moral code that causes him to question many of the clearly questionable activities that go on around him. There are some early growing pains for Julien, who is trained by Officer Danni Sofer. Danni tears into him for not showing up to the funeral of a fellow police officer, which Julien says he didn't do because he didn't know the man. He mentions that he said a prayer for the officer. She explains to him that he needs to demonstrate his support to the other officers who lost a partner because they could one day be saving him. Julien has another learning moment after this when Danni tells him that after a cop is killed, it's important to effectively remind those on the streets that the police are still in charge. Julien takes this advice and gets overly aggressive with someone going through the pockets of a street vendor who'd been attacked, thereby contaminating the crime scene. In addition to learning rookie cop lessons, Julien learns a lesson in the ways of Vic Mackey. Julien catching Vic in the midst of an illegal act and Vic quickly seized upon a secret Julien was hoping to keep, effectively leveling the playing field between the two. Over time, Vic would attempt to be more friendly with Julien, but was generally kept at a safe distance.
