Margaret Schroeder is an Irish immigrant living in Atlantic City. At the beginning of the series, we meet is in an abusive relationship with her husband Hans Schroeder. She is the mother of two children, Teddy and Emily. She soon becomes a widow and someone in whom Nucky Thompson, the most powerful man in Atlantic City, takes an interest.Margaret is a smart woman who is active in politics and a member of the Women's Temperance League and the League of Women Voters. She is an idealistic woman, but is increasingly willing and able to put her ideals aside if it serves her interests in secure a strong, stable living situation for her and her children. As her relationship with Nucky develops, he shields her from the darker side of his exploits in maintaining his lavish lifestyle, but she is also increasingly capable of looking the other way and asking relatively few questions -- to a point.Margaret is ahead of her time in many ways, advocating for health services for women in Atlantic City and pushing for prenatal care and classes during a time in which women were not meant to discuss, let alone seek out, such things. Background: Born in County Kerry, Ireland, Margaret immigrated to the United States on her own after becoming pregnant and having been ordered by a priest to a Catholic asylum to reform her morals. This punishment was handed down despite her (untrue) claim that she'd been raped. She miscarried during the voyage across the Atlantic and eventually met and married Hans in Atlantic City. She has a brother named Eamonn and three sisters, Nuala, Bethany and Aylesh.
