The protege and apparent heir to Nucky Thompson's empire, we first meet Jimmy shortly after his return from receiving treatment for injuries he suffered in World War I, where he took shrapnel to the leg from a grenade. A bright kid, he was sent to Princeton to learn business and eventually return to a high post in Nucky's organization, but Jimmy instead enlisted in the Army and went off to war, drastically changing the direction of his life.Jimmy is the son of Gillian Darmody, who became pregnant with him at the age of 13 after being raped by Commodore Louis Kaestner. Jimmy has grown up mostly looking to Nucky Thompson as a father figure, not knowing the details of Nucky's involvement in bringing Gillian to the Commodore that fateful night. Jimmy met Angela, his wife and the mother of his son, in college. She is an artist.Instead of the high-ranking spot he was expecting upon his return, Nucky decides to use Jimmy more as a driver and body guard -- partly as a result of his disappointment and frustration over Jimmy's decision to waste his potential Princeton education.
