B'ELANNA TORRES is a half-human, half-Klingon who serves with the Maquis rebel and former Starfleet officer Chakotay before finding her fate tied to the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 and its crew. After a brilliant, but troubled two years studying engineering at Starfleet Academy -- she was constantly at odds with with her Klington heritage on her mother's side -- Torres left school. The source of her internal conflict is her father's abandonment at a young age. She has always blamed her Klingon blood for driving him away. Torres later joined the Maquis rebellion in its early stages and, by 2370, was serving as engineer for Chakotay. While serving aboard Chakotay's raiding vessel Val Jean, B'Elanna found herself in battle after Gul Evek, the senior Cardassian officer in the DMZ, found them and tried to capture them. She helped Chakotay escape into the notorious Badlands--where a gigantic plasma wave swept them who-knew-where. She had just figured out that they were 75,000 light years from where they had been, when USS Voyager also appeared. The only company they had was a gigantic array that looked like nothing so much as a communications device. The alien entity aboard that array, who called himself the Caretaker, snatched her and every other person aboard Voyager and Val Jean to a holographic simulation of an American Deep Southern outdoor party. In fact the Caretaker subjected them all to genetic testing. B'Elanna fared worse than the rest and found herself sent to an underground city on the planet the Caretaker had been guarding. She was afflicted with multiple leiomyosarcomas all over her skin, as was her only companion at the time, Ensign Harry Kim from Voyager. In the actions that followed, Voyager's crew managed to rescue her and Kim. Voyager's holographic doctor managed to excise the sarcomas. They never recurred. Not long after that, B'Elanna managed to prove herself more than capable as an engineer. Captain Janeway rewarded her with lieutenant's pips and an assignment as chief engineer aboard Voyager. She is tough, knowledgeable, honest and independent, but her mixed heritage has manifested itself in a state of confusion and denial that some worry is unsustainable as well as unable to be overcome. When she is able to relax, which is somewhat rare, Torres has been known to play hoverball and Parrises Squares.
