Ro Laren is a Bajoran ensign who serves aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Although he resists her assignment initially, throughout her career on the Enterprise, Laren is mentored and encouraged by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who sees her as having great potential. She feels a personal sense of responsibility to him.Commander William Riker is dead set against Ro's assignment to the ship and worries that some members of the crew might object, given her history.Ro forms a friendship with Guinan, who is intrigued about her past. Background: Ro was born on January 17, 2340 on Bajor to Ro Talia and Ro Gale and grew up in the Bajoran diaspora in a refugee camp during the Cardassian occupation, an upbringing that shaped her confused identity and loyalties as an adult. At a young age she was forced to watch as her father was tortured to death and her difficulty in dealing with this trauma caused her to have mixed feelings about her heritage. She graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2362 and was assigned to the USS Wellington. During that posting she was a member of an away mission to Garron II that went horribly wrong, resulting in the deaths of eight members. For this, Ro was court martialed and imprisoned in a stockade on Jaros II.She was released in 2368 by Admiral Kennelly and reinstated to Starfleet after helping track down a Bajoran terrorist, but she never feels completely like she belongs. She favors wearing the traditional Bajoran earring, against Starfleet regulations.
