Empire - Season 2 Episode 16: The Lyon Who Cried Wolf
The series centers around a hip hop music and entertainment company, Empire Entertainment, and the drama among the members of the founders' family as they fight for control of the company. In Season 2, knowing Lucious won’t be held much longer in prison, Cookie and her allies within the Lyon family make a desperate attempt to seize control of the company.
For a minute, for one giddy, glorious moment, I finally got it. I saw the Empire that the millions of people who tune into this show on a weekly basis have apparently been seeing when I couldn't.
The time has come for the question we didn't dare ask: Has Empire righted itself? After all the nonsense of the beginning of this season... is Empire steering itself back on course to being an actual good show.
For all the Lyon/lion metaphors this show conjures, this week brings a new one: Lucious's mother, Leah Walker, is absolutely not a lion. She's a wolf in sheep's clothing.
On the brighter side of the Lyon spectrum, Jamal met a new man in the music biz and entered into his first steamy hookup since breaking up with Michael.
Interestingly enough, there are no childhood flashbacks in this episode. However, moments like when Leah forces Lucious to eat cake, (while wielding a knife a tad too close to him) serve as reminders to those darker times.
Every time I try to write off Lucious, something happens that makes me question why he ended up the twisted man he is today. Now we have a definite answer... His mother.
