Empire - Season 2 Episode 11: Death Will Have His Day
The series centers around a hip hop music and entertainment company, Empire Entertainment, and the drama among the members of the founders' family as they fight for control of the company. In Season 2, knowing Lucious won’t be held much longer in prison, Cookie and her allies within the Lyon family make a desperate attempt to seize control of the company.
If Empire is going to compete with Anderson Cooper calling Donald Trump a 5-year-old, it has to step up its game. Luckily, I think the Lyon family is up to the task.
Fortunately, this week gave us a few answers -- from the most obvious (Lucious is clearly not going down without a fight) to the least (I don't understand anything about Camilla, honestly).
Taraji starts working on her second Golden Globe and delivers a touching monologue about having a miscarriage. It's the first real emotional moment of the episode. The second is Andre breaking down as he packs up the baby's room.
Jamal's song about the freedom to sleep with whomever he likes proves Empire can be sharp on sexuality when it wants. It's hard to think of the last time a television show cared enough to explain the finer points of sexual fluidity to a national audience.
Empire could coast by in this season's remaining eight episodes - and probably for a couple more years - on its Timbaland-produced tunes and its outlandish, GIF-ready charms.
