Valentine Morgenstern is the main antagonist through the story arc of the first 3 books in The Mortal Instruments series. He is described as being tall and well-built, with white-blonde hair and is about 36 years old during City of Bones. He led an elitist group called The Circle when he was a teenager, promising a world where mundanes know of, respect and thank Shadowhunters for their services to the human race. He also wished to create more Shadowhunters as their numbers dwindled. But when his father was killed in a raid on a vampire nest, he became bitter and cruel and started to focus more on another aim that nearly all his Circle members followed (some left). He wanted to rid the world of Downworlders (vampires, werewolves, the fey and Lilith's Children). He saw them as an abomination and soulless - as bad as demons.During the last signing of The Accords, a peace treaty between the Clave and all Downworlders,15 years ago, Valentine and The Circle staged an Uprising. However, their force was defeated by an underground minority movement from within The Circle which called Downworlders in to fight at the moment The Circle attacked. During the fight, Valentine was believed to have died, but this is not in fact the case. The events of City of Bones take place during the signing of the next Accords as Valentine makes a return to disrupt the agreement once again. He loved Jocelyn Fairchild and married her when they were 18/19 years old. His parabatai was Lucian Graymark, and Lucian and Jocelyn had been close friends since they were very small. Valentine and Jocelyn had two children together.
