Jocelyn Fray is a local New York artist with a past she has kept hidden from her daughter, Clary. Formerly known as Jocelyn Morgenstern, and before that Jocelyn Fairchild, she was married to Valentine, and is a Shadowhunter herself. Ever since Clary was a baby, she has taken her to warlock Magnus Bane to erase her memories of the Shadowhunter world and take away her ability to see through glamours.Jocelyn has not only kept her past hidden from her daughter, she has kept herself and her daughter hidden from Valentine since she fled from Idris, home of the Nephilim, after she found out she was pregnant with Clary. Jocelyn also has another child, Jonathan, who she believes is dead. She keeps a box devoted to her son with a lock of his hair and some of his baby clothes, and tells her daughter the picture that goes with it belonged to her father, Jonathan, when it is really only a neighbor that died. Jocelyn also tells Clary her father died before she'd ever gotten to know him.Jocelyn is basically your typical mother: protective, caring, willing to go through anything to make sure you don't get hurt. She doesn't exactly mourn her son, she mourns the baby Jonathan could have been, but who Valentine took away from her. She is also your typical mother when it comes to the people her daughter hangs around with. She doesn't trust Jace, fearing he is just like Valentine because of the way he was brought up, and she fears for Clary's safety when she is with him.Because of her concern with her daughter's feelings for Jace (Jocelyn believes Clary cares too much for him) she is completely clueless of her own feelings for Luke, her best friend, a werewolf, and Clary's fatherly figure. Luke helped Jocelyn with the attack on the Circle during the Uprising, when she realized that Valentine's intentions were evil. He has since remained her best friend, and she remains blind of his feelings for her until in a later book, when he tells her how he feels. In the same book, they start dating and later on get married.
