'I was alive when the Dead Sea was just a lake that was feeling a little poorly.' Magnus is the High Warlock of Brooklyn, said to be at least over eight hundred years old. His mother was a mundane who was tricked by a demon into believing that it was her husband. They had Magnus together, but when she found out what her son was, she hung herself. Magnus was raised by the Silent Brothers of Madrid, Spain, and he received his name from them. 'Alexander, I've been alive for hundreds of years. I've been with men, been with women - with faeries and warlocks and vampires, and even a djinn or two.' Magnus is described as having cat's eyes, being very tall and skinny, possibly of Asian descent, and having a very bizarre and outlandish sense of style; leather pants, spiky hair, a lot of glitter and sparkly accessories. He thinks of himself as a freewheeling bisexual, and openly flirts with Alec, who has yet to come out of the closet . Later on, they end up dating, and Magnus doesn't care who knows it, but keeps it a secret for his boyfriend's sake.Magnus first meets the main characters at one of his famous parties. He is also the warlock Jocelyn went to to erase Clary's memories and block her ability to see through glamours. He at first denies having ever met Clary before, but finally admits it. Magnus is the person the main characters go to for help with various problems throughout the series.Magnus is the only character to be be in all of the shadowhunter books; The Mortal Instrument Series and the prequel The Infernal Devices, which takes place in Victorian London. Magnus is a main character in both the series and provides the books with wit and humour, and some down-right craziness.Spoiler- Later on in the series, The Mortal Instruments- City of Lost Souls, Magnus discovers that Alec has been hiding his intent of finding a way of living forever with Magnus, who is immortal. Magnus is upset and angry at Alec as he believes that living forever is more of a curse then anything else and doesnt' want Alec to go through with watching his family and loved ones die but never aging and dying himself. Alec does not understand this view as he does not want Magnus to be alone after his death, or for him to age whilst Magnus does not, but also seems to believe that Magnus' I live forever, not everyone does to answer for why he has had so many partners means that he is just one in a long line of mortal relationships that end with death.
