Richard Cypher is the male protagonist in Legend of the Seeker , a television show based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. He is described as being tall and having brown hair and gray eyes with a raptor gaze. At the beginning of the series, Richard is a woods guide in a small town of Heartland in Westland, the westernmost country in the books. Richard's father, George Cypher, had recently been violently murdered, and as he was looking for clues he came across a young woman in the forest. Her beauty and obvious intelligence captivated him and he joined her in a quest to find assistance for her country from a dangerous wizard. This began the adventure of Richards life, his destiny tied with that of Kahlan Amnell's, the beautiful and mysterious woman who changed his life forever. The wizard Zedd names Richard the Seeker of Truth, and gives him the Sword of Truth, which only a true Seeker can wield. Learning that Darken Rahl was behind the murder of his father, Richard sets out to defeat Rahl. Zedd and Kahlan set out with him, Kahlan because it is tradition to have a Confessor accompany the Seeker. Richard and kahlan fall in love despite the fact that they cannot consumate the relationship without Richard becoming Confessed. Richard believes they can get around this, which they do in the books, but have yet to do so in the TV series. Zedd accompanies Richard as a mentor, instructing him in the Wizard's Rules. Zedd later reveals that he is in fact Richard's maternal grandfather, and George Cypher was not Richard's biolgical father. The first time he succumbs to their power and becomes power-mad. He orders D'Haran soldiers to fight each other to the death, and orders Khalan, who is in his power to brutally beat Denna to death. Only the actions of his sister Jensen, prevents things from going too far. The second time, Richard learns that in order to control the power of the Boxes, he must be Confessed, and the boxes will in turn prevent him from becoming a mindless slave. While in the process of using the Boxes the Mord Sith attack and Cara jabs him with her Agiel. The confluence of the three powers sends Richard and Cara are sent into a future where the world had been devastated by Nicholas Rahl, son of Kahlan and Darken Rahl. Reluctantly agreeing to join forces, Richard and Cara travel to the ruined People's Palace. There they learn from the old Shota that the only way to return to the present and set things right is to recreate the situation that sent them there. The only Confessor is Nicholas Rahl, so they lure him to the site and Cara does her part despite taking several crossbow bolts. Back in the Present, Cara prevents the other Mord Sith from interfereing, and Richard is able to keep the Boxes together long enough to destroy Darken Rahl.
