Kahlan Amnell first appears in the opening chapter of Wizard's First Rule, and is one of the central characters of the Sword of Truth world. Described as having very long, lustrous brown hair and deep green eyes, Terry Goodkind takes pains to highlight Kahlan's intelligence, resolve and integrity as well as her physical attractiveness. Young though she may be, she is soon revealed to bear great responsibility and the ominous title of Mother Confessor; the youngest woman ever to hold that office in Midland's history. Meeting Richard in his homeland and setting of Westland's forests, she is pursued by four men who make up a 'quad', Darken Rahl's Confessor-assassins. Disposing of these men with Richard's help sets off the chain of events that will lead to their adventure and their journey to the Midlands, where Darken Rahl rules with an iron fist and searches for the boxes of Orden so that he may rule in the world. The Mother Confessor is the ruler of the Midlands and generally has many Confessors under her. Darken Rahl, however, has killed all of the Confessors, leaving Kahlan to be the sole voice of the Midlands and his major opposition. Confessors are described to have long hair, as in the Midlands the length of hair denotes social standing. No one has longer hair than the Mother Confessor. Confessors also all wear matching dresses, though while a regular Confessor's dress is black, the Mother Confessor's is white. This, the length of their hair, and what is called a Confessor's face allow anyone who sees them to instantly recognize them. Confessors travel around the Midlands taking the confessions of convicted criminals. Because of this, they are well versed in the history of the world and are fluent in several languages. In normal times, they are accompanied by a wizard for assistance and protection, but in the time frame happening in the first book, all save 2 of the wizards (the old one and one who sold his services to a queen) are dead, killed by their own hands in order to give Kahlan a head start through the boundary, as they could have been tortured into confessing where she had gone.Kahlan has come to Westland to find a great wizard who has lived there in secret for many years. She needs the wizard to appoint a Seeker of Truth, a legendary post that is a law unto himself. She believes that the Seeker will be able to save the world from Darken Rahl's tyranny. She is also to be the Seeker's guide through the Midlands and to protect him, even with her life.Confessors cannot love without confessing their mates, and Kahlan struggles with her feelings for Richard. Although she initially denies having any feelings for Richard she is later forced to admit that she does. Richard is convinced that they can find a way around it, which they do in the books but have yet to in the TV series. In the Season 1 finale, she reluctantly agrees to marry Darken Rahl after Richard disappears while using the Boxes of Orden. The conditions are that as long as she agrees to be Rahl's wife in all ways, he will agree to her terms, including amnesty for the members of the Resistance. She learns from the witch-woman Shota, also a prisoner of Rahl's, that Richard has been sent into the future. She recruits a young serving girl to try to get a message to Richard in the future to tell him how to return to the present. Her power suppresed by a Rada-han, she gives birth to a son, Nicholas. Knowing that male Confessors eventually go insane, she tries to kill Nicholas, but is stopped and executed. Things were all st right when Richard returned from the future.
