Denna was the leader and considered the best of the Mord Sith, a corps of women who serve as Darken Rahl's bodyguards and enforcers against magic. Taken as children, they are brutally trained until all traces of kindness and compassion are gone. Their final act of training is to kill their father. They are identified by their tight red uniforms and long, braided hair. Their signature weapon is the Agiel, a club-like object that causes intense pain wherever it touches. It also hurts the Mord Sith wielding it, but they have learned to endure the pain. It kills when applied to vital places such as the ear or the heart. Mord Sith also have reinforced gloves to add power to hand blows. Their primary power is the ability to deflect and capture any magic directed against them. The user then becomes a capture, completely under the control of the Mord Sith. The captures are then slowly tortured to death. Mord Sith can also administer the Breath of Life , which revives recently dead victims. They are greatly feared and refered to as Mistress by others, especially their captures.Denna captured Richard through his link with the Sword of Truth. She sometimes passed him around to other Mord Sith, including her friend Constance. On the TV series Richard was able to escape with the aid of Kahlan, and was able to resist the pain long enough to kill her with the Sword of Truth. However on the TV series, Constance found her in time to administer the Breath of Life. For her failure, Darken Rahl punished her by tortureing her in the same manner as a capture. He then sent her after Jensen. She kidnapped Jensen and her mother Taralyn and forced Jensen to retrieve a Box of Orden from within one of Zedd's protective spells. In a confrontation with Richard, she killed Taralyn, who was also Richard's mother, but promised to administer the Breath of Life if they gave her the Box of Orden. Richard countered by offering to give her the Box, if she told them how to get the other two, which were in the People's Palace. Seeing no alternative, Denna told Jensen how to get the Boxes. When they had all three Boxes, Richard put them together and he and everyone else fell under their power. Denna was unable to revive Taralyn, so Richard ordered Kahlan to beat Denna to death. Only Jensen separating the boxes saved her life. Denna begged Richard to kill her, say that a worse fate awaited her if she went back to Darken Rahl. Richard told that she'd better start running. Denna next appeared as the Madam of a brothel, which she was using to cover her Mord-sith activities. In her employ was a wizard who had the power to put spirits in the bodies of the living. Her plan was to kill Richard and place the spirit of a D'Haran general who she had broken in the body. This would give her ultimate control over D'Hara. She presented the replaced Richard while wearing a white uniform, indicating that the Mord-sith had completly broken her capture and taken him as her mate. She also had the spirit of Kalhan's sister Denie put in the body of one of her girls, and sent her after Cara, who had revealed that she had killed denie on the island of Valeria. Kahlan's intervention saved Cara, and they were able to get Richard's spirit back in his body. Denna and Cara fought, and seeing her plans unravel, denna rode away bearing the compass that would lead the Seeker to the Stone of Tears. Denna next killed a group of washer women and diguised herself as one of them, enabling her to capture Zedd. Zedd was able to resist her enough to leave subtle clues for Kahlan and Cara to follow, even after Denna made him chage the bodies of two of her hired thugs to look like Zedd and Denna. Zedd tried to convince her that not that she was thought to be dead, she could live a new and better life. Any thought Denna had for that were ended when Cara shot an arrow through Denna's gut and she fell off a cliff. In the books, Richard was able to escape from Denna by forgiving her and reclaiming his magic, proving the Wizard's Rule of the magic of forgivness. As Denna died, she asked Richard to remember who she truly was, not the monster she'd become. Because of this she became one of the good spirits and acted as Richard's Spirit Guide whenever he went into the Underworld.
