Mrs. Kim is the very strict mother of Lane Kim. She is a Seventh-Day Adventist, and a vegan. Like Lane, she rebelled against her mother. Mrs. Kim's mother was a Buddhist, and Mrs. Kim and Lane are Christian. She is married to Lane's father, but Mr. Kim is never seen and rarely mentioned throughout the series.Mrs. Kim owns a shop called Kim's Antiques. She often claims that her merchandise is authentically from some Revolutionary War-era patriot, though luckily, when pressed, her assurance that she will write a letter of authenticity ends any lingering doubts in the minds of her customers. Her best-known line is, You break, you buy! After hearing those words, no one in town would dare to take off without paying for the damaged merchandise. Many people in Stars Hollow are afraid to cross Mrs. Kim under any circumstance.Though strict, she shows her love for her daughter by trying to understand Lane's choices after Lane moves out of the house. Mrs. Kim's first visit to her daughter's apartment leaves her running away, but after she is told that the boys in the apartment are living as innocently with Lane as if they were girls, Mrs. Kim goes back and finds a way to visit with her daughter and her male roommates. When Lane wants to give up on the band, Mrs. Kim will not allow her daughter to quit, and puts together a touring schedule for the band to play in Seventh-Day Adventist churches. And after Lane agrees to a traditional Buddhist wedding, followed by a Seventh-Day Adventist one, Mrs. Kim puts in earplugs so that Lane can have a rock and roll wedding reception in the town square. She will never share her daughter's taste in many things, but Mrs. Kim loves and respects Lane enough to grow and change to make things work between herself and her daughter.
